Those last musing quests with a tree growing roots and branches reaching, and then something of the nature of the crow reminded me of the Norse Yggdrasil on which Odin hung upside-dawn to receive the runes (language) and his two Ravens (Crows), Hugin and Munir, (I think that’s right). Every day, Odin sent them out to read the land (the battle field of life and death) and they would return and tell him all they observed. He had taught them language with his runic spells. Every day, Odin worried they would not return, Hugin (Thought) he worried would not return, but Munir (Memory, Desire) he feared even more might never come back.
I wondered about the connective roots of this ancient folklore through Scottish and Finnish lore...
